Brain works through associations, all thoughts are connected like everything else in the universe. Are you familiar with Derren Brown? He probably knows a lot more about all this than MIT researchers do, at least in practice if not technically.

Actually I was looking for another video of him, where he gets a woman to use her brain more actively and make her remember details she thinks she shouldn't be able to remember, but that one wasn't available online, so here's another "memory trick":
http://youtube.com/watch?v=L1mweFSqACU

I've also recently experimented with a self-improvement kit called Paraliminals while preparing for my final exams, they do make a difference and I'll keep using them for other purposes:
http://www.learningstrategies.com/Paraliminal/Intro1.asp

It's basically about getting your whole brain to actively take part in the learning/remembering process, a higher level of concentration on the material. Done through self brainwashing, you're motivating yourself to strive harder for your goals in a focused manner. Of course similar techniques can be used shape your entire life and not just for memory.

A mixture of NLP, hypnosis, meditation, it's from the same guy who created PhotoReading I believe, Paul Scheele. Thought these may interest you...
