Right now my right shoe is slightly digging into the inside of my foot causing a very low level of pain. An extra dust particle more or less makes no noticeable difference in my life.

Torturing someone for 50 years would make a story that would last for eons, and would affect everyone’s life now and in the future. Whenever they thought about it, people would feel guilty if they knew that they had traded a barely noticeable dust particle for the torture of another being, and these guilty feelings would span generation after generation.

Over time the quality of life of 3^^^3 people would be immeasurably diminished by the guilt over that torture.
